Medallist back for more

The Canadian Culinary Championships return to Kelowna Feb. 2-3.

Eleven of the best chefs from across the country have competed to represent their regions, with the Gold Medal Plates grand finale at the Delta Grand Hotel.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Canadian Olympic Foundation.

Castanet is featuring an exclusive series of bios on the competing chefs leading up the event.

SHANE CHARTRAND - SAGE, EDMONTON

Shane Chartrand grew up on a farm outside Red Deer and moved to Edmonton for culinary training. Working with award-winning chefs, and training in some of the best restaurants and hotels furthered his skills.

He's made a dent by participating in charity events Kids with Cancer, Make a  Wish, CNIB, and Aboriginal groups across Alberta and B.C. He writes food columns for such at SAY magazine and Native People magazine.

He's won two bronze and a silver in Gold Medal Plates competition, and has earned Chef of the Year, Plate of the year, and Foodie under 40 finalist honours.

Chartrand has been featured in the Great Canadian Masters Cookbook, and is currently writing his own – MARROW, Progressive Indigenous Cuisine.

He's also been featured in the Cook it Raw – Alberta documentary, on Chopped Canada, and says: “Cooking is all I have ever done! I still want to see, learn, do, and cook, more!”
