After-school bus damaged

The operator of a Kelowna karate school is angry and depressed after one of its buses was vandalized.

Rodney Hobson Karate Academy was closed over the Christmas break, and its vehicles were left parked behind the Rutland Road storefront.

Surveillance video shows a man in a dark, hooded jacket peering into vehicles and prying open the bus door.

The incident happened on Dec. 28, but Hobson said he didn't discover the break-in until he returned to work on Monday.

"The thief caused hundreds of dollars of damage and, in the end, only stole a first aid kit that was in the bus," he said.

Hobson says he's taken the bus to four garages in town, and three have said they can't repair the damage. One said it will give it a shot.

Hobson said the vandal was also caught on neighbouring businesses' surveillance cameras, trying doors and scoping out vehicles.

"It's awful... really depressing," he said. "How someone can steal and vandalize from a children's after-school program bus is upsetting."

The bus usually picks up more than 20 kids a day for after-school training. In the meantime, the school is making do with a couple of other vans.
