Cancellations at YLW

UPDATE: 6:30 p.m.

As of this evening, eight flights have been cancelled out of Kelowna International Airport.

YLW senior manager of airport operations Phillip Elchitz says the cancellations are due to a combination of wind direction and visibility.

"There are also multiple delays as a result of weather in Kelowna, Vancouver and Calgary," he told Castanet.

"We expect this weather to continue into Saturday morning and then start to clear, at which time the airport will resume normal operations.

"People should check the status of flights at the Kelowna Airport website or by contacting their airline directly."

Elchitz says the airport operations team is fully staffed 24 hours a day and will continue to keep the runway cleared through the night.

UPDATE: 5:44 p.m.

Earlier in the day, this tweet was sent out from the Kelowna Airport account:

Kelowna International Airport is experiencing numerous delays today.

The airport's arrival and departure board show about 10 flights delayed anywhere from half an hour to an hour or more.

So far, the YLW website is showing no cancellations, however.

Conditions Friday afternoon was -6 C and snowing.

The airport tweeted Thursday that crews have been working hard to keep the runway clear of snow, but continued snowfall is forecast through Saturday, according to Environment Canada.

YLW also tweeted Friday to remind passengers this is the busiest time of year at the airport. Travellers are reminded to check in at least 90 minutes prior to boarding for domestic flights, and two hours prior to international flights.

Meanwhile, some passengers are reporting missing connecting flights because of the delays, meaning they may not be able to get to their destinations until at least tomorrow.
