New fees for new year

With a new year, come new fees.

Starting Jan. 1, fees for dumping garbage at the Glenmore Landfill will increase. The city says the increase will ensure sustainable funding through the life of the landfill.

New dumping costs are as follows:

  • Commercial garbage, debris, construction materials
    • $85/tonne
  • Garbage under 250 kg
    • $11/load
  • Drywall
    • $175/tonne
  • Mattresses
    • $12.50/each
  • Loads requiring sorting
    • $125/tonne
  • Yard waste or wood waste
    • $5/load

With the rate increases, the annual cost of curbside waste collection will be $174.30 starting January 1, 2018.

The increase was approved by Kelowna City council in October.

It's not all bad news though.

Province-wide, the cost of the Medical Services Plan premiums will decrease on Jan. 1, while FortisBC will be dropping the price of natural gas as well.

In Kelowna, business licence renewals are due on or before January 15, 2018.
