Miners vs Brewers - on ice

The Kelowna Rockets may be taking a well-deserved Christmas break, but quality hockey can still be found at Prospera Place.

JDS Mining and BNA brewhouse staff will pad their rosters with former NHL players for a charity game this Saturday in support of the Central Okanagan Food Bank.

JDS has challenged the local watering hole to a hockey match billed as “the Miners vs. the Brewers.”

The event is the brainchild of JDS CEO Jeff Stibbard and former NHL player Brent Gilchrist, president of JDS Resources.

In the past, more than $15,000 has been raised for the food bank.

"We were inspired by Tom Budd and his contributions to the community at this special time of year,” said Stibbard.

This year, the JDS team has decided to “ramp things up a bit by including BNA, adding a women’s lineup and raising its fundraising goal to $50,000.”

NHL players taking part include Aaron Volpatti, Adam Foote, Brent Gilchrist, Jared Smithson, Jeff Finley, Kyle Shuler and Tyler Bouck. Ron Cannan, former Kelowna-Lake Country member of parliament, will be the referee.

Doors open at Prospera Place at 1 p.m. and the puck dros at 1:30 p.m.

Admission, food and refreshments are by donation and all support the Central Okanagan Food Bank.
