Cops show they care

Police in Kelowna are showing they care.

The Sharing Christmas Program makes Christmas merry for families in need of support this holiday season.

It's a joint project between City of Kelowna Police Services staff, RCMP members and the Salvation Army.

Families in need registered through the Salvation Army and will receive gift cards to local grocery stores. They also get to choose a toy from a storehouse of donated items.

"This program helps take the pressure and stress off parents who are struggling and puts a big smile on their children's faces when they wake up on Christmas morning to find a gift for them under the tree," said Kevin Burk of Kelowna Police Services.

The gift cards are intended to help families have a Christmas dinner, or to purchase whatever else they may need.

"It's about providing the necessities for their family, such as having warm clothes, a fridge stocked with food, fuel for their vehicle or, for some, a family bus pass," said Const. Lesley Smith.
