Rig downs multiple lines

UPDATE: 3:30 p.m.

Kelowna RCMP say an excavator with its boom extended was the cause of a morning commute calamity in the Springfield Road area Tuesday morning.

A dump truck was apparently pulling a flatdeck with the excavator on top.

The extended boom loosened several power poles on Belgo Road before damaging a traffic light on Springfield Road causing traffic delays.

Cpl. Jesse O'Donaghey says the driver eventually stopped and readjusted the boom.

He says the company and driver have been identified and spoken with.

There's no indication whether charges are being laid.

UPDATE: 9:20 a.m.

It appears two incident of lines down several blocks apart are related.

Witnesses tell Castanet News a large rig was responsible for knocking down power lines on Belgo Road and a traffic light at Springfield and Neptune roads.

A witness said a flatdeck hauling a large backhoe was to blame.

One lane of Springfield Road was closed as a result.

UPDATE: 8:50 a.m.

It appears a backhoe being transported on a flatdeck came in contact with a traffic light at the corner of Neptune and Springfield roads, causing traffic delays during the Tuesday commute.

More details when they become available.
