A Christmas celebration

Chantelle Deacon

The 29th annual Downtown Kelowna Light Up proved to be a success, with hundreds in attendance to celebrate the kickoff of Christmas on Saturday.

New this year local vendors shutdown part of Water St. selling a variety of homemade products.

“We’re having an amazing time downtown having the light up,” said Ninette Ollgaard, Downtown Kelowna Association. “This year we introduced a winter street market.”

“We have about 20 vendors down here on Water St. in front of City Hall, including food trucks, local retail, all Okanagan and Kelowna based retailers.”

A group of teens didn’t expect their day at the outdoor skating rink would turn into a fun filled day of events.

“We didn’t really plan on coming but last night we were like, ‘Hey, let’s go skating,’ and I had no clue about the light up, we’re just here having fun,” said one young man.

Stuart Park was filled with activities for everyone, including live Christmas entertainment.

At 5 p.m., the tree in Stuart Park was lit up for all to see, by Santa Claus himself.
