Special athletes honoured

Special Olympians from the Okanagan were honoured in the House of Commons, Wednesday, for their outstanding performances and successes at the World Games in Austria last March.

The team included members and coaches from Vernon, Kelowna and Penticton.

  • Tracey Melesko - Kelowna - Cross Country
  • Justin Sigal - Vernon - Cross Country
  • Coach David Wilkinson - Kelowna - Snowshoeing
  • Coach Garth Vickers - Kelowna - Cross Country
  • Coach Ray Huson - Penticton - Cross Country

This was the first time Special Olympics athletes were honoured on the floor of the House of Commons, and it was a proud day for all the participants.

The group received a standing ovation.

There was a reception afterwards at which Prime Minister Justin Trudeau gave a speech and personally met with many of the athletes and coaches. He took the time to shake hands, hug athletes and have pictures taken.
