Let the bells jingle

Madison Erhardt

Jingle bells are a sign Christmas is right around the corner.

The Salvation Army's 2017 Christmas kettle campaign got underway in Kelowna Thursday morning.

Community members gathered at the Salvation Army Community Life Centre in Rutland for the celebration. There was music, cocoa, cookies – and lots of bells jingling.

Last year, the Salvation Army assisted more than 600 local families through its Christmas food and toy program, and was able to bring "toy joy" to over 1,100 children and teens.

"The kettle campaign couldn't be successful without the army of volunteers that ring the bells. We need people who want to take a two-hour shift from Nov. 16 to Dec. 23 at businesses throughout the Central Okanagan," spokesperson Patty Lou Bryant said.

Five thousand volunteer hours need to be filled.
