Long drive to dump RV

Alanna Kelly

Trying to get rid of a unusable recreation vehicle in the Okanagan is impossible – unless you can rip apart the entire thing.

Kane Blake of the Okanagan Forest Task Force removed a burned RV for a man with a disability, but was turned away from landfills, metal recyclers and scrap yards when he tried to dispose of it.

Instead, he had to drive all the way to Chase, where a business said it could dispose of the RV.

“He drove all the way out to Chase, that was the closest place that would take it,” said Blake.

The business ripped apart the RV and crushed it, but didn't want to be named.

Regional District of Central Okanagan says RVs are tricky items to dispose of, and owners need to break them down for disposal.

“It is not an ideal situation, for sure. We’d love to see somebody who has the ability to take this off people’s hands and dismantle them,” said Cynthia Coates, waste reduction facilitator.
