Standoff ends safely

UPDATE 10:35 p.m.

The standoff between a distraught man and police at West Kelowna's Barona Beach Resort has ended peacefully.

“The RCMP wish to extend their thanks to the general public for their support and assistance,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey in a news release.

“We extend our gratitude, especially to those residents evacuated from their homes or asked to remain inside, for their patience and understanding during what was a very dynamic situation.”

Police will begin demobilizing from the immediate area and expect to allow residents to return to their homes very soon. Some officers will remain at the scene for some time for processing.


UPDATE: 10:21 p.m.

Residents are now allowed to start returning to their units at Barona Beach Resort in West Kelowna, according to a resident. 

Emergency crews remain on scene. 


UPDATE: 8:27 p.m.

A heavy police presence continues to surround a resort in West Kelowna.

The unfolding incident has been contained to a single unit within Barona Beach Resort, according to Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.

RCMP ask residents of the immediate area to stay in their homes, while RCMP continue to communicate with a distraught male.

The male, who is believed to be 35 years old has barricaded himself inside his unit and he's believed to be armed.

“Police are asking all remaining residents, within the immediate area of 4026 Pritchard Drive North, to stay inside and seek shelter within their homes,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey. “RCMP also ask that the general public avoid the area, as temporary road closures have been put in place at Boucherie Road and Pritchard Drive.”

The West Kelowna RCMP were called to the scene at about 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 5. 


UPDATE: 7:54 p.m. 

Residents of the 160 unit Barona Beach Resort in West Kelowna, may not be allowed to return home for an extended amount of time. 

Numerous emergency response vehicles remain on scene after a man allegedly barricaded himself into his unit, according to residents living in the building. 

The incident occurred at about 5 p.m. on Sunday evening and the situation remains in progress. 


UPDATE: 7:30 p.m.

A heavy police presence remain near a resort in West Kelowna, say multiple bystanders. 

There is about 20 police vehicles, an RCMP Emergency Response Team and ambulance on scene. 

Pritchard Rd. is blocked from the intersection at Old Boucherie Rd, to Barona Beach Resort where the situation is currently unfolding. 

Residents of the building are not allowed inside at this time. There is no estimated time when they are allowed to return.

Castanet now has a reporter on the active scene for updates. 


UPDATE: 6:27 p.m.

Multiple residents of Barona Beach Resort are hearing reports there is an unknown male with a gun in the area.

An RCMP Emergency Response Team team along with multiple police officers are on scene, according to bystanders. 

Residents are not allowed back into their homes at this time. 

Pritchard Dr. near the resort is current blocked off by RCMP.  


ORIGINAL: 6:15 p.m.

There is a heavy police presence near a resort in West Kelowna, say multiple bystanders. 

RCMP are stopping passing vehicles in the area, near Barona Beach Resort on Pritchard Dr. 

Castanet is looking into the situation and will update the public when more information becomes available.

West Kelowna RCMP will not release any information at this time.
