Promoting self-expression

Madison Erhardt

More than 50 original art works were showcased Friday night, at the 13 annual Artists Among Us art gala.

The event was held at the Rotary Centre for the Arts and was presented by the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Kelowna, as a celebration of recovery and wellness for people who have mental health concerns.

“It is our hope that visitors to the exhibit are challenged in their assumptions about people with mental health issues, helping to remove the stigma and pave the path toward a more mentally healthy community,” said CMHA Kelowna Executive Director Shelagh Turner.

“This annual art gala and exhibition provides one of those rare opportunities where we are able to promote wellness and look at creativity as an avenue to support one’s mental health and recovery," she added.

The ArtWorks Studio encouraged the talented artists to learn new skills, while promoting self-expression.

"Many participants of the ArtWorks Studio have overcome isolation, achieved a sense of belonging and built a stronger connection to the community," said Wellness Manager, Alison Kyte.
