BC dominates competition

Okanagan apple farmers put up an impressive showing at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, when several of them took top honours at the National Apple Competition.

While several local farmers and organizations took home awards for their apples, the two biggest winners hailed from Summerland.

Steve Brown, of Happy Valley Harvest, earned the Canadian Horticultural Council Trophy for grand champion of new varieties with his Ambrosia variety

Meanwhile, Denise and Richard McDonald, of McDonald Farms, were named reserve champions for the Salish entry in the new varieties category.

Glen Lucas, the general manager of the BC Fruit Growers Association, pointed out that Okanagan apples did especially well in the new varieties categories, with first place finishes in Salish, Ambrosia, Aurora Golden Gala, and Other Named New Varieties (for the Nicola variety).
