Dentist will buy back candy

A Kelowna dentist seems willing to cut into his business.

Dr. Vikram Grewal of Okanagan Smiles says he will buy Halloween candy from trick-or-treaters at $1 per pound, up to 10 pounds ($10) per child.

Grewal says he has noticed a spike in cavities in young patients after Halloween.

“It is not so much the volume trick-or-treaters are consuming, but it is the frequency,” he said.

”Repeatedly snacking is detrimental to tooth enamel. It is the consistent exposure to sugar that is the main reason for concern. Sugar is broken down by bacteria in our mouths, which then becomes acid. This acid is what erodes the enamel, and that is the beginning of a cavity.”

Grewal says he has nothing against Halloween, in fact he enjoys the atmosphere, the costumes and all the fun that comes with it.

“Children should go out and enjoy Halloween night! They should be allowed to have their craziness! Yet moderation is key as far as candy is concerned," he said.

All candy collected will be donated to the Salvation Army and Okanagan Boys and Girls Club.

The buy-back campaign will run from Nov. 1 to 8 at the Springfield Road clinic, during normal operating hours.
