New storm, wind our way

It's not expected to be as bad as Tuesday, but another Pacific storm, bringing with it wind, some rain and snow at the higher elevations is on the way.

Environment Canada forecasts about a 40 per cent chance of showers today with winds from the south at 50 kilometres an hour, gusting to 70 both this afternoon and into the evening for both the Central and South Okanagan.

Winds in Vernon and the North Okanagan are expected to reach 40 kilometres an hour, with gusts to 60.

Heavy rainfall warnings, with amounts as much as 50 millimetres, are forecast for the Greater Vancouver and Fraser Valley, while Greater Victoria and the east and west coast of Vancouver Island could see wind gusts as much as 90 kilometres an hour.

Tuesday's storm left tens of thousand of people without power across much of the southern and central portions of the province as winds, packing speeds as high as 90 kilometres an hour knocked down trees and power poles, keeping both emergency and utility crews busy well into the evening.

BC Hydro alone restored power to more than 108,000 customers Tuesday.

Environment Canada has also posted snowfall warnings for the Trans Canada Highway between Eagle Pass and Rogers Pass. As much as 10 to 15 centimetres of snow is expected in that region.
