Pride selects marshals

Organizers of Okanagan Pride Week have named their parade marshals in Kelowna.

Community advocate Wilbur Turner, who served as president of the Okanagan Pride Society for four years, will serve as grand marshal of the Trans March Thursday evening.

Federal Liberal MP Randy Boissonnault, special adviser to the prime minister on LGBTQ2 issues, will lead Saturday's Pride March.

“It is an honour to be able to serve as the grand marshal for this year’s pride parade,” said Boissonnault.

“Standing up for human rights is one of the most important responsibilities of a member of Parliament. Pride is about declaring that no matter whom you love or how you express who you are, you are special, you are beautiful and you belong.”

Turner said he was thrilled to be asked to lead the Trans March.

"I could see that the transgender community was about 20 years behind the gay community in getting widespread support and acceptance," says Turner.

"I was blown away by the community support and to see over 200 people come out for the first event. I have watched the Pride Festival in Kelowna grow from an attendance of 50 people in 2012 to in the thousands. I am proud to have been part of this exciting growth, and proud to call Kelowna my home for the past five years.”

The Trans March begins at 6 p.m. from the Sails. The Pride March begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday from Stuart Park and makes its way to Waterfront Park for the start of a day-long festival.

Pride Week runs until Saturday.
