Wanting to rebuild condo

The developer of the destroyed Water's Edge north building intends to rebuild the destroyed condo, but won't know the full extent of the damage until the end of the week.

The unfinished condo building caught fire on July 8 after a construction worker using a torch sparked a fire that led to the eventual collapse of the entire six-story building.

Steve Shoranick, president of MKS Resources, the building's developer, says they are are hoping to find out by the end of the week the full extent of the damage, and whether they can still use the building's foundation, or if they'll have to start from scratch.

“We're developers, that's why we bought the property, to develop it,” Shoranick said. “That's our intention, it depends on the length of time, it depends on our buyers .... a lot of these issues have to come to play, but our intention is certainly, if everything could work out, to rebuild it. That's our business.”

All of the units in the condo were pre-sold, so Shoranick says they will be getting input from those buyers before making any final decisions.

Insurance adjustors are currently inspecting the damage to all the buildings that were impacted by the fire, including the completed and occupied Water's Edge building, and the Walnut Grove motel.

Shoranick says he believes six or seven units in the completed Water's Edge building were destroyed, along with significant smoke and water damage to the rest of the building, but he doesn't know the full extent of the damage.

As for the Water's Edge North building, he says they should have an idea of how they're moving forward by Friday.

“We're hoping by the end of the week to have things sorted out,” Shoranick said. “Knowing the extent of the damage for everything and also for what we're doing based on the input from our buyers and the safety engineers.”

Regardless of the extent of the damage, Shoranick says he's extremely relieved no one was seriously injured, or worse, in the blaze.
