Car swerves into power pole

A car swerved into oncoming traffic on Rutland Road Wednesday afternoon crashing into a power pole after the driver had a “medical episode.”

The 55-year-old man was driving a blue Pontiac Grand Am northbound on the 300 block of Rutland Road at 12:30 p.m. when he crossed the centre line, missed oncoming traffic, and smashed into a pole.

The man was taken to hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The passenger in the car appeared to be uninjured.

“Police have reason to believe that the driver may have suffered a sudden onset of a physical or medical episode which affected his ability to safely operate his vehicle,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey of the Kelowna RCMP. “Police have put forward a written recommendation for a review of the driver’s medical fitness to ICBC for their consideration.”

The power lines did not suffer damage, but the pole was assessed by FortisBC.

Police are asking for any witnesses to call 250-762-3300.
