103 very expensive calls

RCMP handed out 103 distracted driving tickets in just six hours during a blitz on Enterprise Way last week.

The St. Patrick's Day operation, labelled Operation Hang Up, involved RCMP volunteers with signs on Enterprise Way near Hardy Street, telling drivers to put down their phones.

For those who didn't get the message, officers were set up in three nearby locations to pull them over and hand out tickets.

As well as the 103 tickets for using a cellphone while driving, 31 tickets were issued for other offences. Additionally, 39 warnings were given out.

“An individual's perceived urgency to use a cellphone while driving will never be an excuse to put their lives and the lives of others at risk,” said Const. Steve Holmes. “At crash scene after crash scene, (police) have seen the tragic results of something that is completely preventable.”

A ticket for distracted driving comes with a $368 fine and four penalty points. Offenders will also be hit with an additional $175 insurance premium due to the penalty points.
