Gearing up for bike season

Street sweeping is underway, meaning more Kelowna residents will be jumping on their bikes for their commute.

The city of Kelowna is asking people driving motor vehicles to be more aware of other road users.

Drivers must share the road, obey posted speed limits, check blind spots before turning and look for people on bikes before opening doors to leave a parked vehicle.

Drivers must understand that people on bikes have the right of way in a bike lane and drivers must yield to bikes. Parking and driving in bike lanes throughout Kelowna is not permitted.

The City of Kelowna is currently sweeping all bike lanes and most roadways. Bike lanes in Kelowna are swept several times during the spring and summer.

Bike to Work and School Week is around the corner starting May 29. The event aims to encourage individuals to ride their bikes to and from school or work.

The community event includes daily celebration stations with free breakfast, prizes and games, including the opportunity to meet other cyclists while enjoying the beautiful city.
