Building a better road

Research at UBC Okanagan is helping to make your drive smoother.

A UBCO team has identified an improved method to predict the strength and durability of shale embankments that support roadways.

Geochemical modelling can lead to potential savings when it comes to road design and construction, says Craig Nichol, senior instructor of earth and environmental sciences at UBCO.

"When shale is exposed to the weather, oxidization can occur along with other geochemical changes which can affect the strength of the material, he said.

However, using sand and gravel can be much more expensive.

The team determined certain shales have greater strength than initially believed and would not be compromised by post-construction weathering.

The study allows for better confidence when it comes to designing roads, abutments, and bridges, said Nichol.
