Shared heritage shines in art

My Canada! My BC! My Okanagan! is the theme of this year’s Heritage Week, Feb. 13-19.

With events throughout the Central Okanagan, Heritage Week also celebrates Canada’s sesquicentennial this year, sharing stories of the past as well as visions for the future.

Organizers have chosen the painting Sacred Spotted Lake, by Okanagan artist David Wilson, to represent the week. Spotted Lake, near Osoyoos, is a protected place of cultural heritage and significance to the Okanagan First Nations.

Based on pictographs found in the region, the artist's interpretation embodies traditional stories.

Wilson was born and raised in the Vernon area, and is a member of the Okanagan Indian Band. He studied native art forms from Coastal Salish and Haida artists in Vancouver and came up with his own unique style.

His art draws on the symbols and stories of his Okanagan First Nations heritage and culture.
