Kelowna's astronaut

Kelowna has its very own astronaut, almost.

The Canadian Space Agency announced a list of people who have successfully made it through the first round of the selection process, and one of them is Kelowna-born Ross Semeniuk.

He is currently a wing surgeon in Cold Lake, Alta., and has a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from the University of Alberta, a doctorate in medicine from the University of Alberta, and completed family medicine residency at the University of Calgary.

"As the medical director, I oversee the delivery of medical services for the Royal Canadian Air Force airmen and airwomen," he said on his profile page. “I want to be an astronaut because I have a passion to learn and a desire to pursue space endeavours."

The hiring process to become a Canadian Space Agency astronaut began last year, and there are thousands of hopefuls vying for the two spots.

The finalists will have multiple skills and qualities tested, including integrity, motivation, public speaking, teamwork, reasoning and the ability to synthesize and communicate using plain language.

“I think it would be incredible to apply my skills and experiences in a unique and challenging environment,” said Semeniuk. “I am excited about the possibility of advancing Canada's contribution to space exploration, collaborating with clever scientists and engineers, and engaging with all Canadians to learn about our planet and beyond,” he said.

The two CSA astronauts will be announced this summer. For more information, visit this link.
