Bail revoked in Cactus death

The man charged in the death of an Ontario man had his bail revoked Friday for breaching his bail conditions.

Cory Van Gilder, 26, was charged with manslaughter after a February altercation outside the Cactus Club restaurant on Banks Road.

Police found Zachary Gaudette, 30, unconscious on the ground outside the restaurant when they arrived just before 9 p.m. on Feb. 17.

“I think he got punched and fell on the ground and wasn’t breathing," a witness, Damjan Madjar, said at the time. "I didn’t see any blood. He was white – it was freaky.”

Van Gilder, who has no previous criminal record, was charged in the death five months later.

Van Gilder has some martial arts training and fought in one mixed martial arts competition in 2010.

He was released on bail with several conditions, including keeping the peace and abstaining from alcohol.

His parents put up a $10,000 cash bail bond, along with a $20,000 surety, to ensure he would abide by his bail conditions.

On Nov. 25, Van Gilder was arrested, the details of which are protected under a publication ban.

He has been charged with willfully resisting or obstructing a peace officer and breaching a bail condition. He's remained in custody since his arrest.

Justice Vincent Hogan revoked Van Gilder's bail Friday. He will now remain in custody until his trial, the date of which has yet to be set.

The bail money put up by his parents will not be automatically surrendered, as a separate hearing is required.

Van Gilder has a preliminary inquiry scheduled for May, but Hogan said he would try and have the date moved up.
