Skating on thin ice

As temperatures drop and lakes and ponds continue to freeze over, the City of West Kelowna is sending out a warning.

West Kelowna Fire Rescue reminds residents to stay safe near water areas.

The recommended thickness of ice for safe skating is 15 centimetres for individuals and 20 centimetres for groups, according to the Red Cross.

Fire officials say ice is just starting to form and, while it may look safe and thick enough, it may not be.

People are also asked not to attempt ice rescues, but leave it to professionals.

If you witness someone fall into ice, call 911 for help immediately.
