Busted by 'bait mail'

Two people are in custody after allegedly stealing a piece of Canada Post “bait mail” along with several other packages.

West Kelowna RCMP learned early Monday morning that mail had been stolen from a community mailbox on the 3800 block of Dryden Road in Peachland.

The bait mail led Canada Post inspectors and RCMP directly to a red 2002 Oldsmobile Alero at a Shell gas station in West Kelowna. The two occupants were arrested without incident.

Police say they found stolen mail, break in tools and determined one of the suspects was breaching court imposed conditions.

“RCMP and Postal Inspectors are continuing to work together to deliver the recovered mail to its intended destinations and rightful owners,” says Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey of the Kelowna Regional RCMP.

"Amongst the items seized by investigators, police recovered a cellular phone, gift cards and Canadian Passports.”

Both suspects, a 42-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman of Merritt, remain behind bars.
