Trial by jury in bank robbery

The man accused of robbing the Bank of Montreal in the Capri Shopping Mall in December 2014 has elected to face a trial by jury, which will begin in the new year.

Tayler Verhaegen was charged with robbery and disguising one's face after the Bank of Montreal was robbed at knifepoint in the afternoon of Dec. 23.

Police said a man entered the bank, secured the front doors shut with a plastic tie, and jumped over the counter, confronting the staff.

After robbing the bank, he cut the plastic tie with his knife and fled the scene.

Verhaegen was arrested a few days after the robbery, but was soon out on bail.

Early in 2016, Verhaegen was convicted of attempting to pervert justice when he called and text messaged a former co-worker who was planning on testifying against Verhaegen at a preliminary hearing for the robbery charges.

Verhaegen scared the witness, using phrases like “police seem to think you're a rat," "thanks for throwing me under the bus" and "you will end up seeing me sooner or later.”

He was sentenced to nine months in jail on Oct. 19 for his communication with the witness, a sentence he is currently serving.

Verhaegen's jury trial for the robbery begins Jan. 17, 2017.
