Guilty of manslaughter

UPDATE: 11:10 a.m.

Tears filled the eyes of Aimee Parkes’ family as Madam Justice Alison Beames accepted a surprise manslaughter guilty plea in Parkes’ death.

Ryan Quigley was found guilty Wednesday morning of killing Parkes in 2014 at the Hiawatha Mobile Home Park.

Two days after Parkes' body was discovered in the home they shared at Hiawatha, Quigley was arrested and charged in her death.

Quigley stabbed his ex-fiancee 26 times in the head, neck and upper torso.

He was initially charged with second-degree murder, which carries an automatic life sentence.

At the beginning of the trial, the defence attempted to enter a manslaughter plea but it was rejected by Crown. On Wednesday that changed.

As the manslaughter plea joint submission was entered, Justice Beames declared Quigley not guilty of second-degree murder and guilty of manslaughter.

She told the court she would read the joint submission this week and sentence Quigley Friday morning.

Parkes’ father told Castanet he was too emotional to speak today, but he was incredibly disappointed Quigley was not found guilty of the second-degree murder charge.

He is now holding out hope that Quigley will be sentenced on the high end of the scale, which carries a maximum imprisonment of 14 years. Manslaughter carries no minimum sentence.

The second-degree charge rested on the component of intent to kill, which must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt by Crown.

Quigley’s lawyer, Kevin McCullough, had said his client's second-degree defence would be based on factors of intent, provocation and intoxication. The accepted plea means defence no longer has to present its case.

Quigley's aboriginal ancestry will be considered in sentencing.

Parkes’ family said they will comment on Friday after Quigley is sentenced.

Ryan Quigley entered a surprise guilty plea Wednesday morning to manslaughter.

Quigley admits to stabbing his ex-fiancee Aimee Parkes 26 times in the head, neck and torso. He had initially been charged with second-degree murder, which carries an automatic life sentence.

His attempt last month to plead guilty to manslaughter was rejected by Crown counsel.

However, on Wednesday the defence and Crown made a joint submission on a plea deal.

Quigley, 36, will be sentenced for manslaughter on Friday.

Court has heard Parkes had been in the process of kicking Quigley out of her apartment because of his addiction issues when she was killed.
