Injury at SOPA work site

UPDATE: 3:55 p.m.

WorkSafeBC is currently investigating a workplace injury at the construction site of SOPA Square.

Trish Knight Chernecki with WorkSafeBC says RCMP contacted the prevention office about 11 a.m., half an hour after the incident took place.

She says it appears a man was struck by something and was taken to hospital. It is unclear what his injuries are or how old he is.

It is unclear who the worker was employed by, as several contractors were on site.

The complexity of the injury will determine how long the WorkSafe investigation will take and what the outcome will be.

UPDATE: 3:30 p.m.

Kelowna RCMP confirm they were called to workplace accident Monday morning on Pandosy Street.

Const. Jesse O'Donaghey says RCMP received a request at 10:33 a.m. to assist paramedics responding to reports of a medical emergency near the intersection of Pandosy and Groves Avenue.

“The individual injured is believed to be a man in his sixties, who was taken to hospital with injuries of an unknown nature,” says O'Donaghey.

“Given there was no criminal element believed to be involved, RCMP have turned over the investigation to WorkSafe BC who attended the scene.”

Emergency crews were called to the scene at about 10:30 a.m.

The employee was reportedly taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Workers on the scene were tight-lipped with Castanet, but did say the accident was not a fall.
