A trunk full of bargains

Love a good bargain? Check out this weekend’s trunk sale at Okanagan College.

The garage sale on wheels takes place Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at Kelowna's KLO campus.

Organized by the Regional Waste Reduction Office, more than 130 vendors will be selling their wares straight from the trunks of their vehicles in the college parking lot next to the student residences.

Spokesperson Rae Stewart said the trunk sale promotes re-use and recycling – and deals are the order of the day.

“People are really figuring out how to rethink and re-use, and second hand is a lot more chic than it used to be, which is great. This event is basically one community-style garage sale, one convenient location, good food, tons of bargains, great for families. It’s a terrific way to spend a Saturday morning.”

The twice yearly events were initially designed for people in condos or apartments, who don’t traditionally have the opportunity to host their own garage sales, but anyone can take part.

“After the sale is over, we always have a number of charities on site so those participating don’t have to lug their items home again, they can simply donate them if they choose," said Stewart.

Kelowna and District SHARE Society, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Planet Earth Recycling and the Canadian Diabetes Clothesline group will all be there.

Okanagan Mission Lions Club members will be serving pancake breakfasts.
