Tiny condos snatched up

A new micro-suite development in Kelowna has already nearly sold out.

Cambridge House says it set a new "volume sales record" for the Okanagan, with 172 of the 192 suites sold at opening.

Those who bought included young couples, singles, professionals and investors.

Kevin Bird, president of builder K West Homes, said Kelowna always comes with a high cost and he wanted the opportunity to offer more affordable housing.

"If you look at what is happening to housing choices in world class cities, they are getting smaller. But at the same time they are getting extremely more efficient," he said. "Why is there a need to have space if it doesn’t get used?"

Most of the units are 313-square-foot studio apartments. There are a handful of 451-sq.-ft. one-bedroom units and two 946-sq.-ft. two bedroom units.

The condo, located at the intersection of Ethel Street and Leon Avenue, is expected to be complete in 2018.
