Wind wreaks havoc

UPDATE: 9:30 a.m.

The Kelowna Yacht Club confirms that last night's windstorm has caused significant damage to the marina and many of the boats.

“The breakwater was badly damaged and several boats broke away from the docks,” reads a press release.

“A team of volunteers and staff worked throughout the night to secure as many as possible and the recovery is ongoing.”

The Yacht Club says water to the basin has been turned off due to broken lines and that power has been turned off to some docks due to the damage.

“Members have been advised to assess any damages that may have been incurred and to meet with their insurance adjusters if needed.”

Members have also been advised to take additional safety precautions while visiting the basin.

The Kelowna Yacht Club will be working with members and other affected parties on an ongoing basis until all issues have been resolved.

A press conference will be held at the Yacht Club at 11:30 a.m. today.

While the wind was a major concern for the Bear Creek fire last night, it also caused significant damage throughout the Okanagan.

Winds gusting up to 50 km/h were reported and photos are being shared online of significant damage to homes, boats and docks.

A float plane and some Sea-Doos were thrown around by the wind near Rose's Pub last night.

Several West Kelowna residents reported fallen trees and damage to their homes.

The waters edge, street and sidewalks are littered with debris.
