Teen flips into first

Jonathan Hintz is making waves across the nation after bringing home two gold medals.

The Kelowna teen recently placed first in men’s pro bodyboard and in junior flowboard at the Canadian Championships in Edmonton.

He will now represent the country as he travels to Singapore for the World Flowboarding Championships.

“Bodyboarding is when you are laying down on your stomach or you’re up in drop-knee, and flowboarding is when you are standing up in more of a surfing stance,” explained Hintz.

The teen took up bodyboarding just three years ago before progressing to flowboarding after spending many hours on the H2O Centre’s flowrider.

He says there aren’t too many surf machines in Canada, and having the opportunity to practice in his home town paved the way for his talent to shine.

A variety of tricks on the bodyboad from DK rolls, to rodeo flips and backflips helped give Hintz the win during his last competition.

“It’s pretty hard work, when you’re bodyboarding you’re throwing your weight around in circles and flipping yourself over and over. When I come off, I am just exhausted,” said Hintz.
