If you talk to biking lovers, they will tell you the new mantra around town is that 'cycling is the new golf' – and they want you to see what you're missing.
The recent cycling buzz surrounds rail-trail rides throughout the province, with trails in the Okanagan getting particular attention from tourism associations, trail groups, new rail-trail groups and the province.
To see what all this 'buzz' is about, a perfect opportunity is coming up in the first week of July – The Ride the Okanagan Trestles Tour.
The fourth annual event takes place on July 3 with participants from across Western Canada and beyond heading to the Okanagan to ride the historic KVR Rail Trail.
The fully supported ride is not a race (no timing/ no results), as participants are encouraged to bring their cameras and enjoy the day.
The tour is a one-day cycling event for all ages and abilities. Mountain bikes are recommended as the riding surface is gravel, but the ride is flat and participants can enjoy a two per cent downhill grade with incredible views of the Okanagan Valley.
Depending on your level and fitness level there are also three different distance choices: 80, 40 or 20 kilometres.
The 80-km route is the most popular as it starts at Myra Canyon with 18 trestles and two tunnels.
“The Myra Canyon Trestles Restoration Society reported over 60,000 visitors last season, which is a new record,” says the Glenn Bond with Okanagan Trestles Tour.
“Trip Advisor lists Myra Canyon as the number-one thing to do in Kelowna.”
The 40-km route starts at Chute Lake (the half way point of the 80-km ride) and the 20-km route starts at Glen Fir (above Naramata), with all events finishing in Penticton.
“There are six refreshment stations en route with healthy snacks and drinks,” adds Bond.
Mechanical support and first aid by the Canadian Ski Patrol will be available along the route.
“As mountain bikers arrive in Penticton, they’ll be greeted by live music, a barbecue, wine, beer and cider,” says Bond.
