Dragon's Den for youth

Several young entrepreneurs took home awards earlier this week for their part in a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style competition.

The 22nd annual Young Entrepreneur Competition tasks students in Grades 7-12 to develop a product or service, along with a marketing and financial plan.

Business professionals mentor students throughout the competition.

There were 41 teams competing in School District 23.

“This event shines light on some great ideas, and perhaps more importantly, creates opportunity for young people to learn how to take an idea and make it happen,” said Mike Checkley, president of QHR Technologies, a sponsor of the event.

In the secondary school category, Okanagan Mission Secondary’s Josh Ruda took home top prize.

His company, KV Cresties, specializes in offering spotted geckos for first-time pet owners, and everything that goes along with gecko ownership.

Ruda took home $1,500 for the win.

In the middle school category, first place went to Teagan Adams of Okanagan Mission Secondary.

His company, Doogoods, is a card game that teaches kids to “do good, feel good, and change the world for good.”

Adams took home a $1,000 for his efforts.
