Pledge to fight distraction

Several Kelowna businesses have come together to try and make local roads safer for everyone.

My driving pledge is a website where motorists can go and vow not to use their phones or other electronic devices while driving.

According to ICBC figures, about 140 cyclists are injured in crashes with vehicles each year in the Southern Interior.

ICBC statistics indicate failing to yield the right of way is one of the leading causes of crashes that result in injuries or deaths.

Intersections, where cyclists, pedestrians and motorists all share the same space are also danger areas.

The intersection at Harvey Avenue and Spall Road is cited by ICBC as the number 1 crash intersection in the Southern Interior.

“As Kelowna grows and our streets get busier with more people driving, cycling and walking around the city, it’s important for everyone to take a moment to think carefully about safety,” said Mayor Colin Basran.

“People need to educate themselves about the rules of the road and commit to follow them.”

Several prizes, valued at just under $2,000 is being made available to people who make the online pledge.

Beginning June 1, fines for distracted driving are going up to $543. The Kelowna RCMP is also rolling out a new distracted driving scope, which is capable of spotting drivers who are using electronic devices from more than a kilometre away.
