What fell from sky?

UPDATE 8:45 P.M.

Mystery solved.

It appears the mysterious object fluttering and falling from the sky earlier this week was a piece of fabric used to keep insects away from vegetables at Orchard Hill Farm.

Kathy Wiebe said a dust devil touched down, and eventually pulled up one of the row covers.

It’s a 12 by 100 foot sheet that rarely is ever affected by wind," she said in an email explaining the occurrence.

"After rising hundreds of feet, it came down in our neighbour’s pear orchard, thankfully avoiding power lines."

You could call it a UFO, an unidentified falling, or fluttering object.

A Castanet reader captured a video Tuesday of the object from a deck on Dilworth Mountain, overlooking the Glenmore Valley.

The object does not appear to have any writing on it, making it even more puzzling.

Ken Tapping at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory in Okanagan Falls took a look at the video. While it appears as if it could be tow banner you would typically see being pulled by an airplane, the lack of any discernible writing or markings makes that less likely.

He said some sort of tower poster would be more likely, but again, the lack of any messaging seems to rule that out as well.

As for it being from some sort of balloon, Tapping said to make a regular strip of that size would take a very large balloon.

Even more curious is the fact nobody seems to have reported the landing of the object.

For now, it remains a mystery.

What do you think this object is?

And, if you happened to see this object land, let Castanet know what you saw at [email protected].
