Ogopogo floats away

UPDATE: 1:20 P.M.

Ogopogo is not pleased he may be replaced on the City of Kelowna's parade float.

On his official Twitter account, @TheOgopogo, Kelowna's legendary sea monster said, "OUTRAGE!! I use paddleboards as toothpicks."

What is the world coming to when Ogopogo can be replaced by a stand-up paddleboard.

That's what is being proposed as the city gets set to redesign its parade float.

The image of Ogopogo has been a fixture on the city's float dating back to the 1950s — but now, staff is recommending an "Active by Nature" theme during the latest redesign of the float.

It is expected a new float will be ready for the end of the summer season.

The current float was constructed in 2010 at a cost to the taxpayers of $50,000. Parade floats are traditionally given a fresh look and theme every three to five years.

City council approved a $20,000 budget for the redesign.

"The purpose of a parade float is to tell a story," said event development supervisor Mariko Siggers in her report for council.

"It aims to attract interest, generate conversation and showcase some of the attributes and attractions of the destination. It embodies the community’s identity and culture."

Four themes were considered, including:

  • Active by Nature
  • Ogopogo 2.0
  • Culture
  • Agri-tourism

Siggers said, while all options told a good story, Kelowna is active by nature.

"This brand reflects our community identity and also translates well to a parade float. It aligns well with council’s priority to ensure a healthy, safe, active and inclusive community.

"Early conceptual ideas include a lake to mountain landscape with a variety of outdoor recreation equipment bursting out from it. Some of the featured activities may be cycling, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking and mountain biking."

Council will make a decision Monday.

Ogopogo has yet to comment via his Facebook Page or Twitter account.
