Free parking not so free

It will cost the City of Kelowna more than $9,000 to support a shop downtown promotion.

City council approved a request by the Downtown Kelowna Association to provide free on-street parking for its Small Shop Saturday event.

Small Shop Saturday will be held twice in 2016 – on April 16 and Oct 22.

According to parking services manager Dave Duncan, the estimated impact on the downtown parking reserve contribution will be about $9,200.

That figure is based on an average daily downtown on-street parking revenue of $4,600 per day during January.

"The Downtown Kelowna Association and the businesses really do appreciate this gesture by council. They also realize it does cost the city some dollars," said Coun. Maxine DeHart, the city's representative on the DKA.

"The businesses love it. It has proven to be very, very successful. Businesses tell me on Small Shop Saturday's they are absolutely flooded. They are delighted with the response they get."

Council unanimously endorsed the request.
