Abandoned home burns

An abandoned home in Rutland went up in flames overnight.

Kelowna firefighters responded to reports of smoke from the boarded-up structure on the 600 block of Rutland Road about 2 a.m. this morning.

Crews discovered a fire in the basement of the house.

The fire was successfully extinguished, and no one was found to be inside the building.

The fire department responded with 17 personnel in three engines, along with rescue, safety, and command units. Police, B.C. Ambulance paramedics and Fortis gas and electric crews were also called to the scene.

The fire has been deemed suspicious and is under investigation to determine its cause, said Platoon Capt. Steve Wallick.
