Purse snatcher in custody

Kelowna RCMP are trying to determine whether a purse snatching in downtown Kelowna Wednesday is connected with similar incidents during the past few weeks.

Const. Jesse O'Donaghey says the MO was similar in all cases.

In the latest incident, police say a woman was exiting her vehicle near the intersection of Pandosy Street and Lawrence Avenue when a suspect approached her from behind, grabbed her clutch wallet from under her arm, and fled on foot.

She called for help, and several bystanders quickly jumped into action.

O'Donaghey said two Good Samaritans were hurt while trying to subdue the suspect.

"The bystanders each sustained minor to moderate facial injuries,” said O’Donaghey.

“Officers located the victim’s wallet pinned underneath the suspect as he was taken into police custody. The wallet was returned to the victim with everything still inside."

The 21-year-old suspect faces numerous charges, including one count of robbery, one count of breaching conditions of an undertaking, as well as two counts of assault.

He is expected to appear in court today.
