Residents woke to a smoky surprise in the Mission Saturday morning after a parked SUV caught fire, setting a nearby garage ablaze.

Fire crews responded to the 700 block of Kuipers Crescent at 8 a.m. after neighbours reported a white Cadillac Escalade smoking in a driveway.

"I was having coffee and I noticed smoke coming out of the vehicle and I phoned 911," said Gord Sarafinchan, a neighbour. "It took off quick."

The front of the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived, and the fire had spread to the attached garage of the house.

"The first arriving crew put out the car fire as well as the outside of the house," said platoon capt. Eric Simpson. "It got into a little bit of this office, and they had to make their way in, forcible entry, to make sure there was no extension into the garage, but so far it looks good."

The owners of the vehicle were not home when the fire began and arrived at the scene after the fire had been extinguished.

The cause of the fire was not immediately clear.

"Obviously it started from the car," said Simpson."We're going to get some information from the home owner to figure out if it was plugged in or if it had just finished running."
