Syrians coming to town

Kelowna will be welcoming another Syrian family to Canada today.

The Diocese of Nelson Refugee Committee, based out of Kelowna, sponsored the family of four.

The Diocese, a sponsorship agreement holder made up of local Catholic churches, has sponsored multiple refugee families.

“We have fourteen families in varying stages of sponsorship,” said Keith Germaine, chairperson of the Diocese oversight committee. “One family arrived in August from Colombia, and four more families are arriving from other countries this week.”

The refugee committee is entirely volunteer-based, and works in coordination with many faith-based and secular groups.

As sponsored refugee families continue to make their way to the Okanagan, the first wave of government-sponsored Syrian refugees began arriving in Ontario Thursday evening.

The Liberal government has committed to resettle 25,000 Syrian refugees by March 2016.
