Deer a tangled mess

A young buck has been spotted on Dilworth Mountain with what appears to be a tennis or volleyball net tangled in its antlers.

Doug Donaldson saw the deer in his neighbourhood Tuesday morning and says the animal had the net hanging from its head. While the deer didn’t appear distressed, conservation officers hope to help it.

Conservation officer Josh Lockwood says the animal probably ran through an outdoor volleyball net.

“It would have to be the perfect situation, but we would like to get close to the animal, tranquilize it and remove the net. But, if we do tranquilize the deer, we could end up spooking it and it could run and we may never find it.”

Ideally, if the deer caught the net on an object such as a fence, then conservation would have an easier time removing it for the animal.

“There is always the likelihood the deer will untangle itself,” he says.
