If you received a ticket for distracted driving in Kelowna Friday, you’re not alone.
Kelowna RCMP jump-started their month-long distracted driving campaign Friday with a “road safety blitz” at two locations, on Lakeshore Road and Enterprise Way.
During a seven-hour period, police officers issued 102 tickets to drivers.
Fifty of these tickets were for using an electronic device behind the wheel, and 28 were for not wearing a seatbelt.
“Anytime a driver uses a hand-held device while driving, it takes their attention away from the road around them,” said Const. Jesse O’Donaghey in a statement. “Roadways are very dynamic environments with situations and circumstances that can change quickly. By taking your eyes off of the road for even a moment, you increase the chance of a collision.”
Following the blitz, the RCMP issued a release outlining common myths around using an electronic device in a car.
One such myth the RCMP addressed is using a phone while stopped at a red light. This is still illegal, and you can be ticketed for it.
The release also said simply holding a phone while driving is an offence under the Motor Vehicle Act.
