Seeking shelter from smoke

The Kelowna Gospel Mission will keep it’s doors open 24-7 until smoke from the Washington wildfires clears.

Executive Director Randy Benson says the Kelowna homeless population does not have options available when it comes to staying indoors, in air-conditioning and out of the haze which is causing serious air quality issues.

The smoke is causing the shelter to experience an increase in guests who are having difficulty with sore eyes, headaches and breathing.

“Renovations are underway to expand the shelter but right now space is tight.  However, we feel the need to give our homeless a place to go 24-7 while the smoke is here and as a result are opening our doors. We are so proud of our community for stepping up to support the shelter, both financially and by volunteering their time.

On average the shelter serves about 550 meals a day and the 94 shelter beds are full almost every night.

"With affordable housing difficult to find, Kelowna’s Gospel Mission is the only option for some people,” says Benson.

Benson says the mission is grateful to the community for continuing support.
