Animals killed in traffic

Two incidents involving vehicles and wildlife have left animals dead on Central Okanagan roads.

On Thursday, about 10:15 p.m., a motorcycle rider was travelling along Highway 97 near McCurdy Road when a deer ran in front of the bike. According to RCMP Cpl. Joe Duncan, the rider attempted to avoid the animal but was unable and the bike skidded along the road.

The rider, a man from Kelowna, was taken to hospital with injuries, while the deer was discovered deceased alongside the road.

Then, Monday morning, just before 8 a.m., a car travelling south on Highway 97 struck a bear that was crossing the road near Drought Hill in Peachland.

The driver and passenger, both from Penticton, were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The bear had to be euthanized, as it was determined the animal would be unable to recover from its injuries.

The car had to be towed from the scene.
