Ghost bike sends message

To members of the cycling community it's called 'dooring.'

It's a hazard all cyclists who ride near parked cars endure and it's a hazard which claimed the life of Kelowna cyclist Patricia Keenan a month ago today.

Keenan was riding on Bernard Avenue toward downtown Kelowna when she slammed into a car door which had just been opened by an unsuspecting driver inside a parked car. She died from her injuries two days later.

As a warning to motorists members of the Kelowna Area Cycling Coalition chained a white 'ghost bike' at the location where the accident occurred. The bike will remain there for three months.

Coalition past president Landon Bradshaw said it is his hope that placing the ghost bike memorial could raise awareness to the point where it is also the last time something like this is needed.

"We hope the awareness can be brought forward and people can keep the streets safe for everybody," said Bradshaw.

While an accident like this seems to be a one-in-a-million incident, Bradshaw said it is more common that people might think.

"I have very few friends that are cyclists that haven't been doored. I myself have been doored. With it ending the way it did, that is a very rare occurrence but unfortunately it happens almost every day."

Bradshaw said there were 10 reported cases in Kelowna between 2010 and 2013 while in Vancouver there were 150 instances of dooring in 2014.

Acting coalition president Skye Chataway said the organization was contacted by numerous groups and individuals across Canada to place the ghost bike at the location of Keenan's accident.

Along with awareness, Chataway said the group will continue to work with the city to try and make the roads safer for cyclists and motorists.

"The Kelowna Area Cycling Coalition wants to continue to raise issues regarding infrastructure and work with the city to build better bike infrastructure, safer roads for all road users," said Chataway.

"If that means separated bike paths then that is what we would like to see built."
