Looking for new fire chief

A search will get underway soon for a new fire chief in Joe Rich.

The search is necessary after the Regional District of Central Okanagan announced Thursday the departure of long time fire chief Curtis Nyuli.

Greg Robson, an assistant chief with the department since 2005 will take over on a temporary basis.

Nyuli has been chief of the Joe Rich Fire Department since August of 2003. No reason was given for his departure.

Earlier this year Nyuli's daughter Alexandra was killed in a crash on Highway 33 between Joe Rich and Kelowna.

“We want to assure Joe Rich residents that the safety and needs of the Joe Rich community are extremely important," said Regional District fire and inspection services manager Dan Wildeman.

"Dedicated and trained members of Joe Rich Fire Rescue continue serve their neighbours by responding to calls for medical first response and fire emergencies.  They are also available to help as requested and resources are available through the mutual aid agreement with the Big White Fire Department.”

He added the temporary placement will ensure there's consistency in leadership, training and mentoring heading into a potentially busy summer fire season.

A formal process to select a new chief will begin soon in order to ensure continued community protection and the integrity of the area fire service heading into the summer season.
